The Police have written to us about changes in how Community Policing will be handled, including attendance at Community Council meetings and the provision of a Police Report on activities in our area. Happily, the local police contact email for members of the public remains the same, and is given at the end of their letter below:
Police attendance at Community Council meetings
Prior to 1st April 2020, the City of Edinburgh Council funded dedicated community officers to undertake a number of functions/roles within each ward area and within the South West of Edinburgh, there were 2 officers dedicated to each ward.
Those “funded” officers were previously ring fenced for the purpose of undertaking focused community engagement, taking ownership of issues within their area of responsibility and being a point of contact for a number of partners, groups and the local community.
Part of this role included regular attendance at community councils within their ward area including a report that was delivered by one of the officers.
As a result of the withdrawal of Council funding, we no longer have specific officers dedicated to a particular ward area, however, instead have a community team who collectively address local issues and undertake patrols and initiatives accordingly across the South West locality wherever that priority and/or need arise.
In relation to mandatory attendance at the respective community councils, we no longer have the capacity to commit to attendance for all meetings. Any attendance or report submitted will now have to be balanced with current workload and/or operational commitments at the material time, therefore, I am writing to address your expectations going forward around our attendance at your meetings in the future.
We will still endeavor to attend meetings where we can and provide a report, however, this may not always be possible.
The community team now have a single mailbox that is regularly monitored which I have included below and can be used for getting in touch with us:
